• This photo gallery comes from two different bodies of work done under 40x magnification on a light- microscope.

The “abstract painting” pieces are actually molecular crystals under polarized light. Amino acids are the building blocks that create proteins. These protein chunks are dissolved in high-proof vodka and eyedropped on a glass slide. As the alcohol evaporates the amino acids form large crystals on the surface of the glass that refract light of varying wavelengths and are perceived as different colors. So the building blocks of life crystalize and refract light under a microscope, it’s awe inspiring!

The images of cells were taken with the slides and microscopes of the University of Pennsylvania. The images are slides of tissue, taken from animals like mice, dogs and monkeys. Organs like the brain, liver, intestine, muscle, kidney etc.
