• This gallery showcases the most stunning trees found in forests, rocky outcrops, mountain ridges, swamps, city parks, backyards.

What interests me more than the leaves are the trunks and boughs and branches, they way they fractally split into finer wood. For that reason I frequently photograph in the winter so the observer can see the “skeleton” of the tree.

A theme of my work is solitude and a lone tree captures that feeling for me. Many of these trees are especially old and exposed which gives them a rugged look. Trees are shaped by their environment of cold and wind and drought and for some reason, stress makes things look beautiful. The trees with branches on one side are wind-blown trees, sometimes called flag or banner trees. Scientific name Krumholz tree.
